Proper care and maintenance of your freezer will not only improve efficiency and performance, but will save energy dollars, and help your food contents to last longer.

Location of Your Freezer

Placing your freezer directly near a heat source, outside in warm climates, or where the sun will shine on it, will cause it to work harder than it needs to - increasing energy costs. Find a cool, level and dry space, with adequate clearance at the back for good air circulation, and room overhead or to the side to open the freezer door.

Care & Maintenance

* Check the seal occasionally to ensure proper sealing. If the seal is not adequate, the door may require an adjustment or the seal may need to be replaced.
* Defrost and clean the freezer regularly. Ice build-up will lower it's efficiency.
* Safeguard your small children by keeping freezers locked.
* Vacuum any exposed condensor coils regularly to ensure proper air circulation.
* Keep temperature constant to keep food from spoiling.
* Label and date food contents for quick retrieval, and ensure that foods are properly rotated.
* These tips are general in nature; consult your owner's manual for specific care guidelines.

Moving Day Tips

* You can lay your upright down for safer transport, but turn it on its side with the hinges up, to ensure the door doesn't open.
* You might consider securing the door shut to prevent movement and protect the hinges.
* Remove glass shelving before moving the appliance.
* Wait at least a half hour before plugging your freezer in, to ensure the oil has time to drain back to its proper place in the compressor. Older freezers should have an even longer waiting period - as the oil takes longer to relocate.
* After an extended period in freezing weather, your freezer may not appear to be working after being plugged in, but as it adjusts to the warmer room temperature, the thermostat will tell it to operate.

Take Care on Your Watch

Like any high-precision instrument, a watch needs to be serviced regularly in order to work perfectly. Obviously, we cannot indicate the intervals for such work, which depends on the model, climate and the care taken by the watch's owner.

The small amount of oil needed to lubricate the bearings of the movement gets used up. This can lead to reduced accuracy or even stop a movement. Also the crown can get damaged by hits and the little rubber seals that guarantee the tightness of the watch dry up over time, letting dust and humidity enter the movement.

As a general rule, service intervals are between 3 and 7 years, depending on the use.

We recommend:
- Keep you watch clean. Dust and dirt tend to collect in gaps in the back of the case or band.
- Clean the watch occasionally. Use a soft dry cloth to wipe off dirt, perspiration and water from
the case and crystal.
- Do not use the watch in places where it is exposed to high temperature.
(above 60°C, or 140°F, below 0°C, or 32°F) or extreme temperature changes.
- Never open the watch yourself.
- Whether thermal or other Shocks avoid them.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight to prevent the color from fading.
- Avoid direct contact with solvents, detergents, perfumes, cosmetic products etc.,
since they may damage the bracelet, the case or the gaskets.
- To ensure water-resistance, gaskets must be replaced every 24 months a part of maintenance.
- Do not place the watch to a magnet. Timekeeping will become inaccurate.

- Leather straps look better if they are kept dry. Salt water is particularly harmful.
Do not forget that leather is permeable! Therefore avoid contact with greasy substances and
cosmetic products.

- Store your watch in a dry place when you are not using it.
- Be sure to use the watch with the crown pressed in (normal position).
- If your watch has a screw-type crown, be sure to tighten the crown completely.

- Do not operate the crown with wet fingers or when the watch is wet.

No matter what kind of heating system heats your home, it is important to be sure to maintain it properly. It's a good idea to factor into your budget a visit from your heating/air system professional. But in between professional check ups, there are a few simple things you can do to maintain your steam heating system and prevent major problems.

Step1
Check the position of each radiator in your system. Each one should have a slight slope towards the steam inlet pipe. This will be the pipe that connects from the floor opening or the wall opening on each radiator. If there is no slope to the position, add a ¼-inch piece of wood under the feet of the radiator. This will stop those annoying noises that furnaces sometimes make.

Make sure nothing is blocking the vents. Rust, corrosion or anything blocking the flow of air will prevent proper function. The air must escape properly in your steam heating system. If you don't maintain proper air flow, the air gets trapped inside the radiator and prevents steam from entering. If you find a blocked vent, most local hardware stores carry vents. Allow your steam heating system to cool down before you unscrew the vent to replace it with a new one.

Step3
Check to see if your inlet valves are either all the way open or all the way shut. You don't want them to be partially open or shut. Maintain the positions by turning them all the way to the open or closed positions. Doing this will prevent clanging noises in your steam heating system. The position of the inlet valves will help to regulate the heat properly.

Step4
Look for leaky valves. If you see steam escaping from an inlet valve, it is usually caused by the cap nuts being loose. These are the big nuts at the vertical and horizontal pipe connections. All you have to do is tighten the nuts with a wrench.

Step5
Remember to have your system checked professionally once per year to keep it running at optimal performance. However, most maintenance issues with steam heating systems are simple things that you can take care of yourself.

6 Tips to Keep Your Camera Lens Clean!

Dirt on your DSLR lens is one of the main factors that reduces the image quality of your photos. Although some defects caused by small spots may be repairable in post processing, larger dirts most probably will probably make your photo useless. Even a tiny stain that you haven’t noticed or ignored during the shoot out can ruin hours of hard work at the end of the day. The most important fact that you have to consider before cleaning your lens is to choose a proper method to make sure you don’t scratch your lens surface.

Here we present 6 tips for you to effectively clean (and keep clean) your DSLR lens without giving any damage to it. Remember most of these methods presented here are also applicable to compact digicam and other kind of optical devices:

1 - Use a UV (Ultraviolet) Filter

This relatively cheap filter is a perfect protection for your valuable lens, both from dirt and other impacts. You will be cleaning the filter, thus minimizing the risk of scratching the actual lens surface. We recommend you to keep this filter attached all times, but remember to choose a high quality one otherwise it may degrade the quality of the output image. Since different lenses may have different filter diameters, you may have to purchase one for each of your lens.

2- Use lens hoods, and lens caps for both front and back end of your lens:

The benefits are obvious, keep them attached all the time. Do not forget to keep the lens caps clean when they are not attached.

3- Don’t let dust get in to your camera body

Dust inside your DSLR will attach to the back end element of your lens and also to the image sensor, double trouble. When you are changing lenses, try to find a place with minimum dust and wind, and aim your camera to the floor to minimize the chance of dust getting inside.

4- Use a Blower

Blowers can be used directly to the lens and also inside of your camera. This is a very secure way of cleaning your lens since there is no physical contact with the glass, but on the other hand not very effective as the others.

5- Get a Lens Cleaning Fluid

A small amount of alcohol based lens cleaning fluid makes it eaiser to wipe oil, fingerprints and contaminants off your lens. Lens cleaning fluids are applied to your lens by the help of a cleaning cloth or tissue, instead of directly pouring on the lens surface. Check the lens surface and cleaning clothes to make sure there is no big particles because these particles can stratch your lens easily while cleaning.
An alternative to alcohol based cleaning fluids is to simply breathe on the glass then clean it with a cloth. If this doesn’t get enough, you may choose to use the fluids.

6- Use a Lens Cleaning Pen

T. E. Lawrence (known as Lawrence of Arabia) had a fatal crash on a Brough Superior SS100 on a narrow road near his cottage near Wareham. The accident occurred because a dip in the road obstructed his view of two boys on bicycles. Swerving to avoid them, Lawrence lost control and was thrown over the handlebars.^[1] He was not wearing a helmet, and suffered serious head injuries which left him in a coma; he died after six days in hospital. One of the doctors attending him was the neurosurgeon Hugh Cairns. He consequently began a long study of what he saw as the unnecessary loss of life by motorcycle despatch riders through head injuries and his research led to the use of crash helmets by both military and civilian motorcyclists. As a consequence of treating Lawrence, Sir Hugh Cairns ultimately saved the lives of many motorcyclists since.^[2]

Motorcycle helmets greatly reduce injuries and fatalities in motorcycle accidents, thus many countries have laws requiring acceptable helmets to be worn by motorcycle riders. These laws vary considerably, often exempting mopeds and other small-displacement bikes. In some countries, most notably the USA, there is some opposition to compulsory helmet use (see Helmet law defense league);

not all USA states have a compulsory helmet law.

Worldwide, many countries have defined their own sets of standards that are used to judge the effectiveness of a motorcycle helmet in an accident, and define the minimal acceptable standard thereof. Among them are:

The Snell Memorial Foundation has developed stricter requirements and testing procedures for motorcycle helmets with racing in mind, as well as helmets for other activities (e.g. drag racing, bicycling, horseback riding), and many riders in North America consider Snell certification a benefit when considering buying a helmet while others note that its standards allow for more force (g's) to be transferred to a rider's head than the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) standard.^[5] However, the DOT standard does not test the chin bar of helmets with them,^[6] while the Snell (and ECE) standards do. A motorcycle helmet with either standard will nonetheless provide vastly more protection than one with neither.

In the United Kingdom, the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) defines a stricter standard for racing than the legal minimum ECE 22.05 specification. Only helmets with an ACU Gold sticker are allowed to be worn in competition, or at track days. Many riders in the UK choose helmets with an ACU Gold sticker for their regular on-road use.

Modular (flip-up) helmet, open and closed

There are five basic types of helmets intended for motorcycling, and others not intended for motorcycling but which are used by some riders. All of these types of helmets are secured by a chin strap, and their protective benefits are greatly reduced, if not eliminated, if the chin strap is not securely fastened so as to maintain a snug fit.

From most to least protective, as generally accepted by riders and manufacturers, the helmet types are:

A full face helmet covers the entire head, with a rear that covers the base of the skull, and a protective section over the front of the chin. Such helmets have an open cutout in a band across the eyes and nose, with a plastic face shield (which may be clear or tinted) that generally swivels up and down to allow access to the face. Many full face helmets include vents to increase the airflow to the rider.

The significant attraction of these helmets is their protectiveness. Some critics dislike the increased heat, sense of isolation, lack of wind, and alleged reduced hearing of such helmets. Full face helmets intended for off-road use sometimes omit the face shield but extend the visor and chin portions.

Studies have shown that full face helmets offer the most protection to motorcycle riders because 35% of all crashes showed major impact on the chin-bar area ^[7]. Wearing a helmet with less coverage eliminates that protection — the less coverage the helmet offers, the less protection for the rider.

[edit] Off-Road/Motocross

The motocross and off-road helmet has clearly elongated chin and visor portions, a chin bar, and partially open face to give the rider extra protection while wearing goggles. The visor is to keep the sun out of the eyes of the rider when he or she goes off jumps.

Originally, off-road helmets did not include a chin bar, with riders using helmets very similar to modern open face street helmets, and using a face mask to fend off dirt and debris from the nose and mouth. Modern off-road helmets include a (typically angular, rather than round) chin bar to provide some facial impact protection in addition to protection from flying dirt and debris. When properly combined with goggles, the result provides most of the same protective features of full face street helmets.

[edit] Modular or "Flip-up"

A hybrid between full face and open face helmets for street use is the modular or "flip-up" helmet, also sometimes termed "convertible" or "flip-face". When fully assembled and closed, they resemble full face helmets by bearing a chin bar for absorbing face impacts. Its chin bar may be pivoted upwards (or, in some cases, may be removed) by a special lever to allow access to most of the face, as in an open face helmet. The rider may thus eat or drink without unfastening the chinstrap and removing the helmet.

Modular helmets are designed to be worn in the closed position for riding, as the movable chin bar is designed as a convenience feature, useful while not actively riding. The curved shape of an open chin bar and face shield section can cause increased wind drag during riding, as air will not flow around an open modular helmet in the same way as a three-quarters helmet. Since the chin bar section also protrudes further from the forehead than a three-quarters visor, riding with the helmet in the open position may pose increased risk of neck injury in a crash.

As of 2008, there have not been wide scientific studies of modular helmets to assess how protective the pivoting or removable chin bars are. Observation and unofficial testing suggest that significantly greater protection exists beyond that for an open face helmet, and may be enough to pass full-face helmet standardized tests,^[8] but the extent of protection is not fully established by all standards bodies.

The DOT standard does not require chin bar testing. The Snell Memorial Foundation has not yet certified any manufactured modular helmet using full-face standards.^[9] ECE 22.05 allows certification of modular helmets with or without chin bar tests, distinguished by -P (protective lower face cover) and -NP (non-protective) suffixes to the certification number,^[10] and additional warning text for non-certified chin bars.^[11]

The open face, or "three-quarters", helmet has a rear which also covers the back of the skull, but lacks the lower chin bar of the full face helmet, and does not necessarily include a face shield. Many offer visors of selectable length which may be used by the rider to reduce sunlight glare. An open face helmet provides the same rear protection as a full face helmet, but little protection to the face, even from non-crash events.

Bugs, dust or even wind to the face and eyes can cause rider discomfort or injury. As a result, it is not uncommon (and in some states, is required by law) for riders to wear wrap-around sunglasses or goggles to supplement eye protection with these helmets. Alternatively, many open face helmets include, or can be fitted with, a face shield extending over the upper portion of the face to protect the eyes.

The half helmet, also referred to as a "shorty", has essentially the same front design as an open face helmet but with a raised rear. The half helmet provides the minimum coverage generally allowed by law in the U.S. As with the open face, it is not uncommon to augment this helmet's eye protection through other means. Unlike open face and full face helmets, half helmets are also prone to shifting and sometimes coming off of the rider's head during an accident. Because of their inferiority compared to other helmet styles, some Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses prohibit the use of half helmets during riding exercises.

[edit] Headwear not intended for motorcycling

There are other types of headwear - often called "beanies," "brain buckets" or "novelty helmets" (a term which arose since they can not legally be called "motorcycle helmets") - which are not certified and generally only used to provide the illusion of compliance with mandatory helmet laws. Such items are often smaller and lighter than helmets made to DOT standards, and are unsuitable for crash protection because they lack the energy-absorbing foam that protects the brain by allowing it to come to a gradual stop during an impact. A "novelty helmet" can protect the scalp against sunburn while riding and - if it stays on during a crash - might protect the scalp against abrasion, but it has no capability to protect the skull or brain from an impact.

Although black helmets are popular among motorcyclists, they offer the least visibility to motorists. A rider wearing a plain white helmet rather than a black one reduces his or her chance of collision by 24% ^[12]^[13] because it is so much more visible — day or night. Nevertheless, black helmets outsell white ones (photo, above) by 20:1.^{[citation needed]} Helmets of other colors vary in the visibility they provide to motorists by where they fall on a scale from black to white.

Modern helmets are constructed from plastics. Premium price helmets are sometimes reinforced with kevlar or carbon fiber. They generally have fabric and foam interiors for both comfort and protection. Motorcycle helmets are generally designed to break in a crash (thus expending the energy otherwise destined for the wearer's skull), so they provide little or no protection after their first impact. Note that impacts may, of course, come from things other than crashing, such a dropping a helmet, and may not cause any externally visible damage. For the best protection, helmets should be replaced after any impact, and every three or so years even if no impact is known to have occurred.

The conventional motorcycle helmet has two principal protective components: a thin, hard, outer shell typically made from polycarbonate plastic, fiberglass, or Kevlar and a soft, thick, inner liner usually made of expanded polystyrene or polypropylene foam. The purpose of the hard outer shell is:

to prevent penetration of the helmet by a pointed object that might otherwise puncture the skull, and
to provide structure to the inner liner so it does not disintegrate upon abrasive contact with pavement. This is important because the foams used have very little resistance to penetration and abrasion.

The purpose of the foam liner is to crush during an impact, thereby increasing the distance and period of time over which the head stops and reducing its deceleration.

To understand the action of a helmet, it is first necessary to understand the mechanism of head injury. The common perception that a helmet's purpose is to save the rider's head from splitting open is misleading. Skull fractures are usually not life threatening unless the fracture is depressed and impinges on the brain beneath and bone fractures usually heal over a relatively short period. Brain injuries are much more serious. They frequently result in death, permanent disability or personality change and, unlike bone, neurological tissue has very limited ability to recover after an injury. Therefore, the primary purpose of a helmet is to prevent traumatic brain injury while skull and face injuries are a significant secondary concern.

The most common type of head injury in motorcycle accidents is closed head injury, meaning injury in which the skull is not broken as distinct from an open head injury like a bullet wound. Closed head injury results from violent acceleration of the head which causes the brain to move around inside the skull. During an impact to the front of the head, the brain lurches forwards inside the skull, squeezing the tissue near the impact site and stretching the tissue on the opposite side of the head. Then the brain rebounds in the opposite direction, stretching the tissue near the impact site and squeezing the tissue on the other side of the head. Blood vessels linking the brain to the inside of the skull may also break during this process, causing dangerous bleeding.

Another hazard, susceptibility of the brain to shearing forces, plays a role primarily in injuries which involve rapid and forceful movements of the head, such as in motor vehicle accidents. In these situations rotational forces such as might occur in whiplash-type injuries are particularly important. These forces, associated with the rapid acceleration and deceleration of the head, are smallest at the point of rotation of the brain near the lower end of the brain stem and successively increase at increasing distances from this point. The resulting shearing forces cause different levels in the brain to move relative to one another. This movement produces stretching and tearing of axons (diffuse axonal injury) and the insulating myelin sheath, injuries which are the major cause of loss of consciousness in a head trauma. Small blood vessels are also damaged causing bleeding (petechial hemorrhages) deep within the brain.

It is important that the liner in a motorcycle helmet is soft and thick so the head decelerates at a gentle rate as it sinks into it. Unfortunately, there is a limit to how thick the helmet can be for the simple reason that the helmet quickly becomes impractical if the liner is more than 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) thick. This implies a limit to how soft the liner can be. If the liner is too soft, the head will crush it completely upon impact without coming to a stop. Outside the liner is a hard plastic shell and beyond that is whatever the helmet is hitting, which is usually an unyielding surface, like concrete pavement. Consequently, the head cannot move any further, so after crushing the liner it comes suddenly to an abrupt stop, causing high accelerations that injure the brain.

Therefore, an ideal helmet liner is stiff enough to decelerate the impacting head to an abrupt stop in a smooth uniform manner just before it completely crushes the liner and no stiffer. The required stiffness depends on the impact speed of the head, which is unknown at the time of manufacture of the helmet. The result is that the manufacturer must choose a likely speed of impact and optimize the helmet for that impact speed. If the helmet is in a real impact that is slower than the one for which it was designed, it will still help but the head will be decelerated a little more violently than was actually necessary given the available space between the inside and outside of the helmet, although that deceleration will still be much less than what is would have been in the absence of the helmet. If the impact is faster than the one the helmet was designed for, the head will completely crush the liner and slow down but not stop in the process. When the crush space of the liner runs out, the head will stop suddenly which is not ideal. However, in the absence of the helmet, the head would have been brought to a sudden stop from a higher speed causing more injury. Still, a helmet with a stiffer foam that stopped the head before the liner crush space ran out would have done a better job. So helmets help most in impacts at the speeds they were designed for, and continue to help but not as much in impacts that are at different speeds. In practice, motorcycle helmet manufacturers choose the impact speed they will design for based on the speed used in standard helmet tests. Most standard helmet tests use speeds between 4 and 7 m/s (9 and 16 mph, or 14 and 25 km/h).

Most motorcycle helmet standards use impacts at speeds between 4–7 m/s (9–16 mph). At first glance, this is confusing given that motorcyclists frequently ride at speeds higher than 20 m/s (45 mph). This confusion is relieved by understanding that the perpendicular impact speed of the helmet is usually not the same as the road speed of the motor cycle and that the severity of the impact is determined not only by the speed of the head but also by the nature of the surface it hits. For example, the surface of the road is almost parallel to the direction the motorcyclist moves in so only a small component of his velocity is directed perpendicular to the road while he is riding. Of course, other surfaces are perpendicular to the motorcyclist's velocity, such as trees, walls and the sides of other vehicles. The other vital factor in determining the severity of an impact is the nature of the surface struck. The sheet metal wall of a car door may bend inwards to a depth of 7.5–10 cm (3–4 inch) during a helmeted head impact, meaning that it generates more stopping distance for the rider's head than the helmet itself. So a perpendicular impact against a flat steel anvil at 5 m/s (11 mph) might be about as severe as a 30 m/s (67 mph) oblique impact against a concrete surface or a 30 m/s perpendicular impact against a sheet metal car door or windscreen. Overall, there is a very wide range of severity in the impacts that could conceivably happen in a motorcycle impact. Some of these are more severe than the impacts used in the standard tests and some are less so.

The speeds are chosen based on modern knowledge of the human tolerance for head impact, which is by no means complete. It is possible to deduce how well the 'perfect' helmet outlined in the Function section of this page would perform in an impact of a given severity. If currently available data suggest that the rider is unlikely to survive in such an impact, regardless of how well his helmet performs, then there is little point in demanding that helmets be optimized for this impact. On the other hand, if an impact is so mild that the rider is unlikely to be injured at all so long as he is wearing a helmet than that impact is not a demanding test. Modern standards setters choose the severity of the standard test impact to be somewhere between these two extremes, so that manufacturers are doing their best to protect the riders who can be helped by their helmet during a head impact.

So you've bought that bike you were dreaming of for ages. So what is the first thing that you do? Get yourself a helmet, that's what. A helmet is your first line of defence in case of a bang-up, something that could make a difference between life and death. Sirish Chandran brings you the lowdown on helmets, how and what helmet you should buy, helmets you should avoid besides evaluating eight of the best helmets available in the country.

As usual, I tried hard to come up with something funny to start off this feature. But fret and fuss as much I could, there was nothing funny to conjure up when the subject veers around to helmets. My dear friend and colleague Freddy Gilles was killed in May purely due to negligence. Negligence on the part of the road development authorities for littering the road with debris but more importantly negligence on Freddy's part for not protecting his head with a helmet. Had Freddy been wearing a helmet as he used to daily, he would have been with us today.

Helmets save lives. Period. Anybody who tells you otherwise is insane or has his eye on your share of the inheritance.

In all developed countries and most developing nations helmets are compulsory for bikers. Back in the seventies when helmets were made compulsory in Britain, anti-helmet activists went to great lengths to protest against what they felt was an infringement on their rights, some even converting to Sikhism to avoid wearing a helmet. But now a helmet is a part and parcel of the biking culture and nobody questions the wisdom behind its use. Even in countries like Bhutan and Nepal, helmets are compulsory. It is only in India that political compulsions have come in the way of enacting and enforcing legislation making helmets compulsory. Sad but true, our government is more concerned with protecting its vote bank than protecting lives of citizens.

History:
The basis for any protective device is two-fold: there must be the perception of risk and also the perception that the said device somehow attenuates that risk. From antiquity to the present, protective headgear has prevailed whenever both these perceptions exist, and has disappeared whenever either perception is questioned.

The use of protective headgear may be as old as warfare itself. There are numerous accounts of how Alexander the Great had been saved many times by his fluted helmet and even the 'Iliad' contains references to head injuries prevented by helmets.

The protective capabilities of all headgear are continually being balanced by their wearers against other features such as visual impact, comfort and ease of use. The importance of visual impact, what sociologists might describe as the headgear's ceremonial and decorative function, is particularly strong in our species. This visual impact of headgear will always weigh heavily in subjective evaluations of a helmet's worth.

What does a helmet do?:
For starters, a helmet keeps your head warm and dry while also protecting you from the elements. The second and most important function a helmet serves is to protect your 'nut should you get knocked off. A helmet can't protect your head against all-foreseeable high speed and low speed impacts, as there are a number of accidents that can take place. The use of a well-fitting, securely fastened helmet can minimise the risk of death or permanent impairment due to head injury.

There are broadly two types of helmets: full-face (where a chin bar and flush-fitting visor cover the face and chin), and open-face (sometimes referred to as Jet-type helmets) where the face and chin are exposed. The type you choose depends largely on what type of riding you plan to do and what level of protection and comfort you desire.

Dandruff is the most widespread hair problem especially among men. If you ever had dandruff, also known as scurf, you know what it’s like – irritated scalp and itches, flaky skin and constant wondering whether to wear black or not. Many people err to believe that dandruff is caused by dry skin, frequent head washing or poor hygiene. These popular myths can lead to ineffective and often – inappropriate treatment and even worsen the situation.

Dandruff has a negative impact on one’s self esteem, and people suffering from that condition are usually more sensitive about their appearance than the rest.

What causes dandruff?

Dandruff is caused by a type of fungus – Pityrosporum ovale. Upon a normal organism state is does not cause any problems.
However when the skin pH balance in the hairy part of the head is broken and the environment is alkalized, the fungus starts to breed faster and due to the more frequent change of skin cells it leads to peeling.
The cause of the accelerated fungus growth has not been found, but the most probable causes are increased fat secretion by the organism, hormonal disbalance, stress, different ill-conditions of the nervous system, suppressed immune system, oversensitivity to the fungus itself or even inherited susceptibility to dandruff. In rare cases dandruff can be a manifestation of an allergic reaction to some of the chemicals in hair gels, hair sprays, hair oils or other hair products.
Very few people know that there are two forms of dandruff – external and internal. External dandruff is caused by excessive use of hair products - sprays and gels, improper use of hair-coloring products, excessive use of hair curlers or hair straighteners, cold weather, dry indoor heating, stress, infrequent shampooing of the hair or inadequate rinsing of the scalp. Internal dandruff can be caused by hormonal imbalance, emotional stress, poor health, poor hygiene, allergy to some foods, lack of rest, excessive consumption of sugar, fat and starch and hereditary predisposition.
Even though there is a lot more to be found about dandruff, what is unquestionably known about it is that it is a medical, rather than a cosmetic problem.

What are the symptoms of dandruff?

white, oily flakes of dead skin
itchy, scaling scalp
too dry or too oily hair
greasy skin covered with flaky white, or yellow scales.

How to treat dandruff?

In most cases it is not necessary to consult the presence of dandruff with a physician. Dandruff is a chronic condition which can almost always be controlled, even though it requires patience and persistence.
It is always recommended to use a special medical shampoo which can be found in your local pharmacy.
There are several types of commercially available shampoos, containing active dandruff fighting ingredients. However there are not enough convincing researches related to them so they are not registered as medical products, but as cosmetic shampoos.
The most anti-dandruff products contain active ingredients such as: Sodium bicarbonate, Zinc pyrithione , Salicylic acid , Selenium sulfide, Tea tree oil , Tar.
The most effective substance, and most recommended by dermatologists worldwide, is ketoconazole – also known as Nizoral (most often in 2% concentration) which is known in the area of medicine with its wide specter efficiency in treatment and prevention of seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, lichen planus and other fungus skin diseases.
The effect of ketoconazole has been repeatedly and thoroughly researched. Researches of its efficiency against different types of fungus show that ketokonasol breaks the fungus cell wall, which leads to its extermination.

What should I use?

Ketosal could be the answer. It is a medical shampoo with 2% content of ketokonasol that can keep your dandruff under control, so you won’t be constantly checking on your shoulders. Ketosal can stop the fungus breeding cycle.

ACNE

Acne is a skin condition characterized by plugged pores, inflamed pimples and deeper lumps that can appear on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. The disorder is most common throughout the teenage years when appearance is of particular importance. Acne is rarely a serious medical condition, but it often causes emotional distress and can be upsetting to the patient.

The reason acne occurs is the sensitivity of the body towards the increased level of the male hormone testosterone, which is present in both males and females. This stimulates the oil (sebaceous) glands of the skin to enlarge and produce and excess amount of sebum (oil) – natural substance, which lubricates and protects the skin.

At the same time, acne occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells that dissociate from the inside surface of the sebaceous glands. The sebum produced by these glands accumulates with the dead skin cells in the follicle and solidify as a soft plug. This plug may cause the follicle to bulge and produce a whitehead or it may be open to the surface and darken, causing a “blackhead”. The sebum stimulates bacteria, which live on everyone’s skin and generally cause no problems, to multiply and cause surrounding tissues to become inflamed.

Inflammation near the skin’s surface produces a pustule; deeper inflammation results in a papule (pimple); deeper blockages and inflammations inside follicles produce lumps beneath the surface of the skin called cysts.

Certain medications, such as oral contraceptives, antibiotics and corticosteroids can aggravate the condition of the acne. For some women, acne can be an indication of the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or hormonal imbalance, which can lead to abnormal menstrual periods, sterility, excess hair-growth and overweight.

How to avoid scaring or other damage to the skinDon’t pick or squeeze blemishes as this might cause infection or scarring. Cleanse the skin with a soft cotton pad, dipped in herbal infusion or ethereal oils. Touch your skin only if your hands are clean.

PROPHYLACTICS

You can avoid or control acne with good basic skin care and the following self-care techniques:
Wash problem areas with a mild cleansing bar or a gentle lotion that doesn’t dry the skin. Of the many available brands, oil-free, water-based moisturizers are generally a better choice.Ultraviolet (UV) rays in moderation are good for your skin as they can cure acne.

However, keep in mind that during summer it is recommended that you avoid exposure to the sun in the period 10:00AM – 15:00PM.Carefully choose your skin products – avoid oily or greasy sunscreens, hair-styling products or skin products that contain benzoyl peroxide. Ensure that the products are labeled “noncomedogenic” or “water-based”.

Try to decrease general sweating – don’t stay in places that are too hot and wear fabrics that allow the skin to “breathe”.Avoid consuming too much salt with your food. Salt causes the cells to loose water, which can aggravate the condition of the acne.Apply tea tree oil directly on the blemishes on a daily basis. If the oil is too concentrated, you can dissolve it in water.

Keep your hair clean and off your face. Also avoid resting your hands or objects on your face. Some hair products such as hair-gel and hair-spray can be the reason for the condition in specific facial areas (the forehead). Stop using them for a couple of weeks to see how it affects the acne.

TREATMENT

Aromatherapy:

Some ethereal oils control the production of sebum. Amongst them are the Cedar Cone oil (not recommended during pregnancy) and the Atlantic White Cedar (should be avoided during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy). Lavender and geranium oils have antiseptic and healing qualities, while those of camomile and bergamot reduce inflammation.

Try the following procedures:Add 2 drops of Cedar Cone and 2 drops of Atlantic White Cedar oil in a glass of water. Apply the mixture on the skin every 2 hours.Add 2 drops of Juniper oil to a table-spoon of Jojoba or Sweet Almond oil and stir.

Apply directly on the problematic skin areas.Add 2 drops of Bergamot and 2 drops of Atlantic White Cedar to 5 tea-spoons of Jojoba oil. Add the same mixture of oils to a face-cleansing lotion. Apply the oil mixture in the evening and the lotion – in the morning.

ACNE AND DIET

It is proven that acne is not caused by foods. However, it would be wise to keep a diary of the consumed foods throughout the day to determine whether some of them can cause acne.Some women experience acne if eating chocolate just before their menstrual period.
Generally people who suffer from acne have less Vitamin A in their blood, which is why foods rich in vitamin A and ?-Carotin are highly recommended. However, any vitamin intake should be closely monitored by a health care specialist.

HERBAL THERAPY

Mix dried roots from Dandelion, Burdock, Nettle, Yarrow and Echinacea and prepare a potion. Drink 1 glass once or twice a day.Boil up 2-3 tea-spoons dried basil in a glass of water. Cool the mixture and apply with a cotton pad on clean skin.

Cleanse your skin once a day using a Steam bath: keep your face for about 5-10 minutes covered with a towel and above a bowl filled with hot water. Afterwards dry your skin and apply Rosewater, Black Elder water, Camomile extract or Marigold tea. A good idea is to add a couple of drops of Marigold infusion into the hot water.Dandelion, Burdock, Yarrow and Echinacea roots cure acne by reducing and eliminating the skin bacteria.

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL HELP

In case of unresponsive or severe acne or acne that is believed to be a result of an ongoing medical treatment, it is essential that you consult a primary-care physician or a dermatologist.

The secret of the “tricky” liquid eyeliner lies in the mastering of few techniques that we will graciously share with you just days before the hottest part of the summer.

Proper make-up foundation

You need to give a base coat of foundation and powder for the eye make-up to adhere to. Even if you don’t want to wear foundation, just apply it to your eyes and always use liquid eyeliner after eye shadow application.

The foundation is needed so that it can even the color of the skin around the eyes and create a smooth, oil-free surface for the make-up.

You do not need to try and apply the liquid liner all in one long line. It is highly recommended that you follow the Triple Technique, instead of spending half an hour in front of the mirror in timid attempts to sweep the brush across your eye lid.

The Triple Technique consists in painting a few small dashes onto the lash line, the inner, middle and outer corner then going back and connecting them.

If needed, go back and repeat the lines.
If you are trying to achieve the cat eye look – starting at the inner corner of your eye, slowly draw a thin line across your eyelid and extend that line past your lash line.

If you use brush liner to apply all of the abovementioned techniques, you will also achieve a sexy look, but with a far more natural effect.

Regardless of your choice of products, don’t be afraid to experiment in the privacy of your own home.

As Nokia's cellphone anthropologist puts it, all over the world people take three things with them when they leave the house: keys, money and phone.

The result: an easily lost or stolen device with a lot of private and sensitive data on. And a book released this week called iPhone Forensics (published by O'Reilly) gives an insight into the surprising amount of personal information a smartphone can store. Or give away.

Here's a list of ways in which your iPhone could release sensitive data about you - I image much the same could be gleaned from other similarly advanced handsets.

Past keyboard input - "Nearly everything typed into the iPhone's keyboard is stored in a keyboard cache, which can linger even after deleted." That will include user names, passwords and much more.
Deleted images from the photo library, camera roll and web history can sometimes be recovered.
Deleted address book entries, contacts, calendar events can also sometimes be recovered.
"Exhaustive call history, beyond that displayed, is generally available." The last 100 entries can usually be found, and deleted call records recovered.

TIPS FROM THE LAUNDRESS

Pretreating stains will help us remove them from your clothes. Here are some tips for pretreating along with some other miscellaneous helpful hints. Just remember that a stain is more likely to be removed if treated while it is still fresh, so we need your help!

Oil Stains: Use cornstarch to help absorb oil stains. Sprinkle the stain with cornstarch, wait 10 to 15 minutes and scrape off.

Candle wax: Gently scrape off as much of the hardened wax as possible. If it's a colored candle, sponge the stain with a stain remover spray. Place the stain between clean paper towels and press with a warm iron to melt and transfer the wax to the paper towels. Rotate or replace the paper towels as they absorb the wax. Repeat until no more wax is released. Rub a little liquid laundry detergent into the stain and wash in warm or hot water, adding chlorine or oxygen bleach, whichever is safe for the fabric. You can also spray the area with the stain remover and let it sit until you are ready for your clothes to be picked up.

Gum: Put the article of clothing in the freezer or put ice on the area to harden the gum. Scrape off using a butter knife after about 10-15 minutes. Apply stain remover and launder.

Coffee: If you’re anything like The Laundress, you simply cannot do without your coffee! I've dabbed at many coffee stains in my busy life! Just dab a little water on the stain and let it go, for now. If your fabric tends to water spot, like silk, just leave the coffee stain alone. Later, for fabrics that can safely be cleaned with water, sponge the stain with a clean cloth dipped in a solution of 1 tablespoon plain hand dishwashing liquid mixed into 2 cups cool water. Blot with a dry cloth and repeat until the stain disappears. Rinse and blot dry. If the chair fabric can't be cleaned with water or if milk was in the coffee, sponge the stain with a dry-cleaning solvent until the stain disappears and blot dry.

Red wine: If it is a delicate fabric, soak the spot with denatured alcohol. Flush with white vinegar to remove the stain. On sturdy fabrics, coat the stain with salt and let it stand for five minutes. Stretch stained area over a bowl; secure with a rubber band. Place in sink; carefully pour boiling water over stain from a height of at least a foot.

Butter: Salt can help absorb the grease while it's still fresh and keep it from soaking further into the fabric. Artificial sweetener also does the trick. The next day, pretreat the stain with your usual laundry spot remover or rub a little liquid detergent into the stain and launder it in the hottest water that's safe for the fabric.

*Remember to remove pens, money, receipts and any valuables from pockets of clothes before putting them in your hamper or tote. However, if you do miss something, it will be put in a Ziploc or envelope and returned to you with your laundry.

Big empty walls getting you down? If you haven't found the perfect tapestry or can't get your Monet back from the Art Institute of Chicago, you've still got to put something on your wall to make it feel like home.

Get down to the local thrift store. Look through the art they have there. It's not likely to be any good, but you might get lucky; in any case, what you're looking for is the frames. In fact, the more horrendous the art, the better, because it's likely to be cheaper!

Get a couple vintage-looking frames and toss the prints of angels and hippie landscapes. If the frames are looking shoddy, spray paint them! A nice glossy black is very chic on a carved frame, or you can just do a touch up with gold paint or a nice stain. What to put inside? We don't recommend you try your own hand at painting--not for your wall. Why not get some cool paper from Papyrus or your local paperie, or frame an interesting piece of fabric?

It's just another easy way to make life more lux for cheap or free.

With this guide to wall decor with paint, I hope to show how you can achieve a contemporary interior by painting your wall to go with your home interior. You’ll also find ideas to add unique touches to your wall and home decor.

Preparation

Before painting, I'd recommend you spend some money on a primer. This is where the stage is set for a great application of paint. This is particularly true if the walls have imperfections so the better the primer, the less the paint is absorbed into the wall. Ultimately, you're going to spend less money on the paint itself.

If however, the imperfections remain despite the prep work, don't lose sleep over it. Paint it over with the best paint your budget allows and use strategically placed furniture and paintings to disguise these flaws. The goal of painting is to move your decoration forward, not slow it down.

Wall Decor with Paint Using Bright Color

The palette for contemporary decorating using strong, bright and bold color is an evolving trend. Other than primary colors, consider searing secondaries such as orange, violet, lime and fuchsia add vibrancy to the interior. The sharp orange splashback contrasts well with the green kitchen furnishing shown below.

As a general guide, strong colour needs a strong hand. Rather than paint all four walls the same shade, it can be more effective, and less tiring to live with, to treat walls as separate planes and pick out one in a bright colour while leaving the rest in black or white.

The living room below shows how a wall of solid earth red color pulls the eye toward the black, graphic furniture and the vivid backdrop.

Alternatively, bright clashing color from the same spectrum such as scarlet, raspberry, salmon and coral can look great in combination. Highly decorative wall treatments – specialized paint effects, beautifully painted wall murals, elaborate frescoes – can be most exquisite if executed in masterly fashion.

The walls below are decorated in the opt-art (left, middle) and Hawaiian (right) themes respectively and are fine examples of how color in the same spectrum can be combined.

Wall Decor with Paint - Muted Hues

Muted interior color suggests quiet luxury and helps provide a classic, modern background. When deciding on wall decor with paint, look to fashion, with the soft browns, taupes, mushrooms and beiges of camelhair and suede. These sober, subtle shades, suggestive of different textures and materials, can be enlivened with sharp accents of burnt orange, pale and mint green, or dressed down with plenty of white to create a soothing, sensual atmosphere.

The ivory-colored rooms above uses a mix of textures (feathers, leather, silk, velvet, shells, marble) to create an ethereal, romantic interior.

Wall Decor with Paint – White

For the contemporary decorator white is always a classic. Any shades of white with a hint of magnolia, rose or eggshell lets in the light and makes the room bright and clean.

White wall decor with paint goes with anything, but what works best is more white. An all-white scheme makes spaces flow into each other or transforms a room into a private haven. Restful, clean and sharp, white is also luxurious. At the same time, it can reveal dirt and imperfections of plasterwork and clever lighting is essential to avoid the sterile, clinical look.

The bedroom above has monastic white walls and ceiling. Coupled with minimal embellishment, it appears serene and allergy-free.

White on white has the minimalist’s seal of approval, but it need not be stark. Using pickled wooden furniture with white walls can give a soft, intimate and spiritual effect. This decorating style has been in use since the turn of the century and has since evolved with greater focus on texture and light.

Wall Decor with Paint - Matt vs Glossy Paint

Matt painted textures let the color speak for itself. Overtly distressed paint techniques are recent development in contemporary home decor and paint that been rubbed or washed on the wall in dilute form can provide a translucent, shimmering effect to contrast with pristine floor finishes fittings.

For a slick finish, try painting wall gloss — a great solution for kitchens and bathrooms where water-resistance is a priority. Comparatively, matt and glossy walls react differently to light, and shiny ones are more noticeable than matt of the same color. Hence gloss paint will show up lumps and bumps, and is best on near-perfect plasterwork.

Specialized Paint for Wall Decor

Specialized paint effects can be laborious but well worth the effort. A linen finish can be obtained by first pigmenting the wall, then scratching back the plaster and effect left to dry naturally. If you like a shinier effect, glaze the wall followed by polish.

Glazing walls instead of just painting is no vain glorious extravagance: they last a great deal longer. Stucco and the Moroccan version, tadelak, are very warming if polished. Some designers have a penchant for high-gloss car spray paint because of its ease of application (true lacquering takes an age). The example below shows the high-gloss result.

Maintenance Tips

With time, walls will be marked by furniture or hands rubbing against the walls. Cleaning with soap will remove some of them but the wall color will change too. The best solution is to re-paint the area.

When doing renovation job, always keep small cans of the paint colors used for such touch-up jobs. Or lessen the problem with paint which is formulated to make cleaning easier.

Many people use a limousine service for their wedding. If you have the budget, consider using a limousine rental. This takes the load off of who is going to drive who where. Plans change at the last minute and now you have to scramble. But with a limousine service, the plans are not going to change. They will pick up anyone you want and take them anywhere they need to go.

Here in Florida the rates are competitive and unless they offer coupons, or discounts on multiple cars. Most services charge 20% gratuity for the driver up front, so be sure you are getting quality before you sign. The biggest complaint about limousine services is the "no show", or late show. When you spend money, you want a professional who knows where they are going. Why do no shows happen? Let's not kid ourselves, we all know why. They didn't forget, everything is written down. They know where they have to be. They over booked on your date or at the last minute needed your limo for a bigger more profitable job, or else they would be there. Airport limo companies are not good to use for weddings as their schedules are too hectic, and there's too many last minute changes in flights and travel plans. You are much better off with a company whose specialty is weddings. The wedding limo is scheduled for you, and cannot change.

When To start Looking For A Limousine Service
A good time is 3-8 months before the wedding. We gave a deposit 7 months in advance because we chose an Excalibur and a Rolls Royce Limo, and wanted to be certain they were available. If you are using a standard limo, then 3-6 months in advance is fine. Allow 1 week to call and interview all the limousine services, and reserve one Saturday to inspect the operation of 3-5 good candidates.

Ask people you know who were recently married.
They can recommend the limousine service they used if they were happy. They can also warn you about companies they rejected as well. Also, ask your photographer. Studios know who shows up on time and who does not. In the wedding industry vendors know each other. Another source is the yellow pages. Try to pick only the companies who specialize in weddings.

Visit the limousine company and view their cars
You must make sure the cars are kept in good condition. If the are in bad shape, you can bet that they'll break down on the way to your wedding.
If you plan to use a Rolls Royce, Excalibur, or other unique car, make an appointment with the limousine company at a time when you can see the car.

This is usually early on Saturday and Sunday mornings before they leave for a wedding. You want to make sure the car you are going to pay top dollar for is in good condition. Believe it or not, many old fashioned Rolls Royce limousines are in sad shape, because they are too old. The average life of a limo is only about 3 years due to mileage.

Some of the fancier old fashioned limousines can no longer be repaired for rips in the seating, or have other parts replaced, so you want to ensure you are paying for a car that is in good shape. If you just want plain Lincoln type limousines, they all look the same. But also ask to see the premium cars listed in their ad and see if they really own it and is it all they touted it to be. One company advertised what I call a "gimmick limousine" with an extra wide "Bridal Door", to allow the bride with a wide dress to easily pass through the door.

But a friend checked it out and reported that the car was in terrible shape. So don't just get sucked in by gimmick limousines with the beds and tubs in the back, check them out first. Don't sign the contract for a premium limo unless you have seen it, and sat in it first. This is why you must visit the limousine service to inspect their cars.

BridalTips.com Consumer Alert: Rolls Royce Limousines

While shopping around you'll notice many companies in the yellow pages that claim they have have Rolls Royce or Excalibur limos. We discovered that many do NOT own the limousine, they contract it out from another source. In fact, most companies only have standard Lincolns and contract out the Rolls or Excalibur, while claiming in their ad that they have the car. They are just acting as brokers. If you want a Rolls or Excalibur, do like us and avoid dealing with these people. If they don't own the car, they have no control over whether it will show up or not. This is a major root cause of limousines not showing up. Avoid the middleman and go right to the source. Suppose you sign a contract for a Rolls Royce. The day of your wedding Elton John flies into town for a concert and needs that Rolls Royce. Who do you think will get it? You think you will, because you signed a contract? Don't be so naive!

Ask to see their package plans if they have any.
Get flyers with pricing and limo photos on them.

Combination Pack (1 Rolls Royce and 1 standard limo)
The catch here, is the Rolls is usually for 2 hours and the regular limo for 3 hours. This may be fine for most cases, as the regular limo can be used to ferry several people to the church, while the Rolls is brought in last to transport the bride to the church, then to the reception with the groom.

Top Of The Line Package: (1 Rolls Royce and 1 standard limo)
Only this package gives you the Rolls for 3 hours as well. You may need this package if the reception is far from the ceremony. Usually the Rolls is for the bride, and the stretch limo is for the bridal party.

Fantasy Package: Market Price.
Some limo services may have a totally outrageous, off the wall limousine in their fleet that we call "gimmick limousines". The service we chose boasted "South Florida's Longest Limo". Seating 15 people with 2 axles in the rear, this car turned heads wherever we went. People on the road were taking our picture, and passing cars on the freeway video taped the car. Priced at $295 for a three hour package, we knew it was costly, but we wanted to go out in style, and I partied on with 14 family members and groomsmen during our ride to the church.

Depending on where you live in the country, the prices could be much higher, or lower. In metropolitan areas like New York, Washington D.C., and Boston, the cost is most likely much higher.

You Must Have A Clear, Concise, Written Contract!

If you end up in court disputing your limo driver, the judge will say is "Where is your contract?" Make certain there is a written contract and that everything you expect of them is in writing. If they refuse or give you nothing but a bunch of verbal claims, get up and leave. Do you think they will remember 10 months from now what they promised you? A written contract will help them remember. You want the contract to state the type of limousine, how many it seats, and what package you chose. The contract must also state how long you have the limousine for. This is very important. You don't want the driver holding out his hand for more money when you least expect it. The contract must also state what the overtime rate is for each vehicle. If they refuse to do this for you, get up an leave. Any reputable business would have this information on a standard contract without question. The contract should also list who your driver will be. Now is the time to pin them down. Then you have a basis for a claim later. If you interviewed any drivers that you liked, then have their names placed on the contract. The contract should show how much deposit you gave, and how much is owed. Most usually require payment in full 2 weeks before the wedding.

A couple of sample complaints we have heard in the past:

Instead of the $70 per hour quote, he now expected $100 per hour... When I called to ask for a refund, both the driver and the owner of the company basically told me to check my contract, "the one that I did not have" because they never sent it. Yes, I am stupid for not having a contact, but I had used them in the past for rides to the airport, so I did not believe that I would have a problem. They would not give me a partial refund, or even credit me with a couple of rides to the airport. They'd rather loose all referrals for weddings, and me as a business account.

Well, he was supposed to pick me up at 10:30 AM to take me to the church. 10:30 came and went... My stepfather told the driver he had missed us, and instructed him to go to the church... The limo driver gets into the driver's seat and says to me "so, where are we going"? Well, we finally got the country club (some of the last to arrive), and the driver went around and opened the door for my maid of honor, but failed to do so for me. Then he proceeded to follow me (wanting to either be paid or tipped, it was never clear to me.)

My Aunt Anita saw this and intercepted the fellow, telling me to go inside and asked him what he wanted. She got my dad who told him that he was not going to get paid at all, given that he didn't bother to arrive in time to get me to the church. And that is exactly what happened: my father told his credit card company not to pay, and they didn't.

One week before the wedding, call to confirm the date and time.

Fax a precise set of directions to the limousine service, on how to get to your house, reception, church, etc. Any maps or mapquest printouts you include will be helpful. It helps even more to type the instructions, so the driver can't show up late and say you gave sloppy instructions. Get the driver's cellular and pager numbers also. They usually call you from the limo when they are on the way to get you.

Keep a copy of the map and directions with you on the wedding day.

You may need to give them to the driver if the limo company sends a different driver at the last minute and you don't want to hear "so where are we going?" from the driver. Just give them the map!

Questions to ask the Limousine Company:

How many cars are in their fleet? Some services only have a few cars, but book several weddings, and contract out cars from other agencies. Our limousine service did 17 weddings the day we got married and had to contract out extra cars! But we had a contract stating the owner was our driver, and that we got their cars, so we were pretty much guaranteed he would show up. Usually the owners will be more reliable as their reputation is at stake.

Ask them how much deposit they require. The company we used only required a $20 deposit.

Ask for a flyer that shows prices in writing. You don't want them making up inflated prices on the fly. You want a rate that is fair. Do they have a flyer with photos of their cars? If they don't have it written down on a flyer, chances are they are unscrupulous, you should scratch them off your list, and move on to the next limousine company.

Have them describe the worst wedding situations they have been in, and how they handled it.

How much is the overtime rate? Some weddings could run longer than expected, and you want to know how much the overtime rate is per vehicle that you use. You want no surprises. This is a huge source of problems for many newlyweds.

Who will be your driver? We found the owner to be a very nice gentleman and his name went on the contract to drive our Rolls. His son's name went on the contract to drive the Excalibur. Try to get the owner or their family members to be your driver. Family members have a reputation. Always try to get the owner!

If you cancel, can you get your deposit back? Most companies will not refund deposits, so choose one with a low deposit, and be certain before you sign that this is the company you want. Don't be a moron, give a deposit, then research limo companies. The correct order is Research, Choose, Deposit. Avoid limousine companies that charge high deposits. The company we chose however, will allow you to apply the deposit toward their services within one year. Luckily, they only require a $20 deposit. There is no reason for any limousine company to require 50% deposit.

So what limousine package did we go with?
We chose a rather unusual package of three premium limousines. We had "Florida's longest limousine" with a bed in the back, that seats 15 people, used for the groom, groomsmen, and several family members for 4 hours ($350). We also had the Excalibur limousine pictured below, seating 6 people for the bride and bridesmaids for 4 hours ($350). And lastly we had the antique Rolls Royce to take the bride and groom to the reception from the church with a 2 hour time limit ($175). Because we used all 3 of their top cars, we were able to negotiate a lower price with them. These prices include about $125 in savings, as they let us use the 15 seater and the Excalibur for one additional hour free. We also had to pay an additional 20% gratuity for the driver.

There really is not a whole lot of science here, just try to negotiate your cost down, and get everything in writing. This is easier if you are using 2 or more limousines. And remember, if they don't put it in writing, it means they won't do it!

Hello. I would like to know if it is permissable to get tattoos. Also, I would like to know what is permissable as far as jewelry is concerned. I know men can't wear much, if any, jewelry. What if it is a wedding ring? Can women wear wedding rings? If so, should it be worn on a particular hand and finger? Thank you for any info can can give me.

Salamu alaikom Elizabeth,tattoos is not justified in islam for both men and women.for women jewlleries are a justified and this conditioned by the use of such jewelleries for the husband or mahram men but not justified for the use in front of non mahram men.for men they are not allowed to use jewlleries.regarding wedding and rings,the nonmuslim's tradition in this regard is rejected by islam,muslims should not follow the traditions of non muslims,however muslim women are allowed to use whatever ring given by the husband as a gift but they should not follow the tradition of non muslims wearing such ring in a specific finger or hand as a sign of marriage. best wishes.

for a man to wear silver is ok, however as far as i know that is the only type of material that we can wear now is it ok to wear any other metal such as gold white gold platinum etc.. also does items such as diamonds also fall under this area?

Assalaamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh.

It is not permissible for a man to adorn himself with silver nor gold, nor any other metal or stone. However, he is only allowed to wear a silver ring, the weight of which should be less than one mithqaal (4.68 grams).

*It has been narrated from Abdullaah ibn Abaas (radhiallaahu anhuma) that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) saw a gold ring on a man's hand. he removed it and threw it away. Thereafer he said, "Do any of you proceed towards a coal of fire and place it on your hand?" (Muslim)The Hadeeth shows that wearing a gold ring leads to the fire of Jahannam.

*It has been reported from Ali (radhiallaahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) took silk and placed it in his right hand, and took gold and placed it in his left hand. Thereafter he said, " Certainly these two are forbidden upon the males of my Ummah." (Abu Dawud)

*It has been narrated from Buraydah (radhiallaahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said to a man who had on him a ring of brass, " Why is it that I sense the scent of idols from you?" So the man threw away the brass ring. Thereafter he came with an iron ring on him, upon which He (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said, "Why is it that i see on you the adornment of the people of the fire?" The man said, "O messenger of Allaah! Of what can I make a ring?" He (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) replied, "From silver, and let in not be one mithqaal." (Tirmzhi, Abu Dawud)

The authour of Durrul Mukhtaar writes : A man should not wear any ring but of silver. A ring of anything besides silver, such as stone, gold, iron, brass, copper, glass etc., is forbidden. One can deduce from the aforementioned narrations, that jewellery of any type is forbidden for men, other than single silver ring, the weight of which should be less than one mithqaal. Beautifying and adorning oneself is a trait of a woman and thus not suitable for men. Resembling and immitating women in any way is abhorred in Islam.

Diamonds too fall under the category of jewellery and adornment and therefore will not be suitable for men.

Question #2102 assalamualaikum. recently i came to know that there is no zakaah for diamond or precious stones. i also came to know that alims are divided in deciding if there is zakaah for ornaments that is worn by women. pl clarify whether there should be zakaah on overall gold stock or only on those that is stored as wealth.

Bismillaah-ir-Rahmaan-ir-Raheem Assalaamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh.

1) The difference of opinion in whether or not Zakaah is due on jewellery worn by women is between Imaam Abu Haneefah and Imaam Shaafi'eey (rahimahumullaah) . If you are a follower of the former you will be liable to pay Zakaah on whatever jewellery you own for personal use whether or not you wear it and irrespective of whether it is for personal use or stored as wealth.

*If a woman owns jewellery equal to 612.35g of silver or 87.479g of gold, she will be liable to pay Zakaah even though she does not wear the jewellery at all. (Durrul Mukhtaar)

*If a woman owns gold and silver jewellery. the combined value of which equals the Nisaab of silver (612.35g), Zakaah will be Fardh. (Bahrur-Raa'iq, Fataawa Darul Uloom)

However Imaam Shaafi'eey is of the opinion that Zakaah will not be due on jewellery if it was is worn even once during the course of the year. According to him, Zakaah will only be due on jewellery that is not used at all and stored as wealth.

2) Zakaah is not due on any precious stones or diamonds.

* If jewellery for personal use (not for sale) has precious stones or pearls in it, Zakaah will not be due on the value of the stones and pearls. The stones and pearls will not be regarded as part of the gold if they are distinguishable from the gold. This is the Fatwa of Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (ra). However, it will be best if the person includes the value of the stone to the gold so that there is more benefit for the poor, and there remains no doubt with regards to the fulfillment of Zakaah.

* Zakaah is not due on any precious stones mounted on gold jewellery. (Aap ke Masaa'il aur un ka Hal)

However when distinguishing the weight of the gold minus the stones or diamonds one should be particularly cautious. Many a time, it is difficult to know the exact wieght of the stone. In such cases you would rather give more, than risk giving less Zakaah than is fardh on you. And Allaah knows best.

Air-conditioning

Air Conditioning and refrigeration are provided through the removal of heat. The definition of cold is the absence of heat and all air conditioning systems work on this basic principle. Heat can be removed through the process of radiation, convection, and conduction using mediums such as water, air, ice, and chemicals referred to as refrigerants. In order to remove heat from something, you simply need to provide a medium that is colder -- this is how all air conditioning and refrigeration systems work.

An air conditioning system, or a standalone air conditioner, provides cooling, ventilation, and humidity control for all or part of a house or building. The Freon or other refrigerant provides cooling through a process called the refrigeration cycle. The refrigeration cycle consists of four essential elements to create a cooling effect. A compressor provides compression for the system. This compression causes the cooling vapor to heat up. The compressed vapor is then cooled by heat exchange with the outside air, so that the vapor condenses to a fluid, in the condenser. The fluid is then pumped to the inside of the building, where it enters an evaporator. In this evaporator, small spray nozzles spray the cooling fluid into a chamber, where the pressure drops and the fluid evaporates. Since the evaporation absorbs heat from the surroundings, the surroundings cool off, and thus the evaporator absorbs or adds heat to the system. The vapor is then returned to the compressor. A metering device acts as a restriction in the system at the evaporator to ensure that the heat being absorbed by the system is absorbed at the proper rate.

Central, 'all-air' air conditioning systems are often installed in modern residences, offices, and public buildings, but are difficult to retrofit (install in a building that was not designed to receive it) because of the bulky air ducts required. A duct system must be carefully maintained to prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the ducts. An alternative to large ducts to carry the needed air to heat or cool an area is the use of remote fan coils or split systems. These systems, although most often seen in residential applications, are gaining popularity in small commercial buildings. The coil is connected to a remote condenser unit using piping instead of ducts.

Dehumidification in an air conditioning system is provided by the evaporator. Since the evaporator operates at a temperature below dew point, moisture is collected at the evaporator. This moisture is collected at the bottom of the evaporator in a condensate pan and removed by piping it to a central drain or onto the ground outside. A dehumidifier is an air-conditioner-like device that controls the humidity of a room or building. They are often employed in basements which have a higher relative humidity because of their lower temperature (and propensity for damp floors and walls). In food retailing establishments, large open chiller cabinets are highly effective at dehumidifying the internal air. Conversely, a humidifier increases the humidity of a building.

Air-conditioned buildings often have sealed windows, because open windows would disrupt the attempts of the HVAC system to maintain constant indoor air conditions.

Air-Conditioning Maintenance

The best time to service your air conditioner is before you actually need it.
Regular maintenance and cleaning are extremely important.
Change your filter monthly. Other than the regular filter, there are additional ones you can use, but you need to check with your air-conditioning maintenance person first.
You can get a cap from your hardware store to put on the end of your air-conditioning drain (figure A). After capping it, you can find the end of the drain outside and you can use a dry vacuum to suck out the dirt. Be sure to remove the cap once you have vacuumed.
An air-conditioning technician needs to use a high pressure vacuum to clear the drain. It should be done yearly to avoid any backup that could cause mold growth in your air conditioner and water damage to ceilings and wall.
To clean the air-conditioner coils, make sure the power from your unit is disconnected first! Then wet the area you are cleaning with the garden hose. Using gloves and safety glasses spray the commercial air-conditioner cleaner (available at an HVAC supplier) onto the coils (figure B). Let is set for a short while and then rinse it down thoroughly with your garden hose.
